Tshisekedi's suicidal all-or-nothing gamble

Félix Tshisekedi has spent eight years plundering the country, he and his clan. Since the dawn of his rule, it has been a string of embezzlement scandals, killings and forced disappearances of opposition figures. Through it all, he has found a manipulative formula: accuse and smear Rwanda, yes, the Rwanda that is developing, as if it were the one stopping him from developing the DRC, when all he does is loot it.

Right after his disputed reelection in December 2023, Félix Tshisekedi hit the road across all 26 provinces of the DRC. His goal was not to promote development projects, but to prime and manipulate the Congolese people for his plan to rewrite the Constitution.

In 2014, Félix Tshisekedi and his father, Étienne Tshisekedi, joined popular protests in Kinshasa against a law they believed was meant to pave the way for a constitutional change by then-President Joseph Kabila Kabange. Yet Kabila never said a word about, nor took any step toward, clinging to power. In 2018, he went on to hand power to Tshisekedi on a silver platter.

On Friday, October 23, Kinshasa's Parliament, the "national ensemble," if it can be called that, passed a sharply hardened referendum law on second reading, three months after the Constitutional Court sent it back.

Félix Tshisekedi has chosen to set the DRC ablaze. The new law hands Tshisekedi and his Parliament the power to change the Constitution without consulting the people. Worse, the tightly locked Article 220, which President Joseph Kabila Kabange had respected, is banished from the Tshisekedi law.

“Félix Tshisekedi has spent eight years plundering the country, he and his clan. This time, after 66 years of a vicious circle, the Congolese people must rise up, summon their courage, take their destiny into their own hands and free themselves from this manipulative, materialistic political class.
